Vancouver, Canada – June 1, 2010: ADALA, the Canadian Arab Justice Committee, condemns in the strongest possible terms Israel’s illegal attack on a humanitarian aid convoy in international waters and the killing of at least 9 people. The ships in the convoy were carrying humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza who are under an illegal land, sea and air blockade imposed by Israel. An attack on unarmed ships in international water is an act of piracy and a violation of international law. The Israeli siege on Gaza has caused immense suffering, destroyed the economy of the Gaza Strip and thereby deprived the population of the means to earn a living. The United Nations secretary general, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and all major human rights organizations have called on Israel’s government to end this inhumane and illegal blockade against a caged and defenceless population.
ADALA calls on the Canadian government to:
- Support the formation of a UN-led investigation into the Israeli attack on the humanitarian convoy and the resulting killing of civilians;
- Support recommendations made by such an investigation, including the possible prosecution of those involved in crimes;
- Demand that Israel lift the inhumane and illegal blockade on the Gaza Strip;
- Join European and other nations’ condemnation of Israel’s attack;
- Pursue the implementation of the recommendations of the UN fact-finding mission led by Justice Richard Goldstone regarding Israel’s 2008-09 invasion of the Gaza Strip and bring to justice those who may be found responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Anything less will be a betrayal of our values as Canadians and our traditional role of supporting international law and human rights.
ADALA – The Canadian Arab Justice Committee is committed to heightening public awareness of Arab issues, fostering participation of Arab-Canadians into political and public discourse, promoting fairness in Canadian foreign policy towards the Arab world and defending civil and human rights of Arab Canadians in Canada. |
